The Food Waste Movement kicks off in the USA

January 6, 2015

2014 was the year that kickstarted the movement against food waste in the USA. Here are our top 5 highlights:

1. The first ever Feeding the 5000 event  in the USA took place in Oakland, California.

The event brought together a wide coalition of organisations including NRDC, St Vincent de Paul, End Food Waste, Food Shift and Sustainable America as well as activists   Rob Greenfield, Jonathan Bloom and Robert Egger. Thousands of people ate a free lunch made entirely out of food that would otherwise have been thrown away, demonstrating the delicious solutions to food waste. Hundreds of pounds of wonky fruit and veg rejected by supermarkets were also given away, and an incredible program brought together food waste warriors from all over the Bay Area and beyond!

2. The first ever campus Feeding the 5000 took place at University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.

3. Feedback’s founder, Tristram Stuart was named as one of National Geographic’s Emerging Explorers.

4. Michael Pollan added a new food rule focused on food waste, urging everyone to take control of their plate.

5. Gleaning

Ahead of both Feeding the 5000 events in the USA our volunteers went out onto local farms to glean produce that would otherwise have been wasted, highlighting the vast amounts of food waste on farm level due to excessive cosmetic standards of retailers.
