Sussex Surplus

Our recipe for social value in Sussex

Sussex Surplus is building a thriving local food economy by creating employment opportunities and providing nutritious meals and products, powered by surplus produce.

Millions of tonnes of edible food go to waste in the UK each yearexposing the huge inefficiency of our food system.

At the same time, many young people, especially those who are neurodiverse, face barriers to meaningful employment and training opportunities.

Sussex Surplus turns food waste into a community strength — creating jobs, cutting waste, and providing nutritious, affordable food to communities across East Brighton.

Using surplus food from local farms, wholesalers and allied organisations, the project offers community meals and stocks a community fridge at it’s base in the Bristol Estate Community Hub in East Brighton. Sussex Surplus empowers neurodiverse young people through meaningful employment opportunities, hands-on culinary training, and workplace skills. By making long-life products and offering event catering, it’s a growing social enterprise.

It’s a powerful recipe for reducing waste, building skills and confidence, and strengthening local food resilience.
